Umma Salma : The British Council in Bangladesh provides and manages a wide range of scholarship programmes, including Commonwealth Scholarships, Charles Wallace Professional Visits programme, Hornby Scholarships, Women in Stem Scholarships, and GREAT Scholarships.

To present these scholarships offers to key stakeholders, the British Council has organised a virtual event, Study UK Scholarships 2021: #We Believe in Education on 17 January 2021.

The event was attended by around 100 representatives from a wide range of organisations, including public and private universities, study abroad counsellors, IELTS registrations centres, national and international NGOs, the British High Commission, and the Ministry of Education. It started with a welcome address by Jessica Magson, Director Programmes, British Council. She spoke about the British Council’s work in Bangladesh over the past 70 years, particularly in education.

Syed Tirtho Mahmood, International Education Services Manager, British Council was the next presenter. He spoke about GREAT Scholarships 2021 – the event’s primary focus. GREAT Scholarships 2021, launched by the Study UK campaign together with 41 UK universities, supports postgraduate students from Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Thailand to access world-class UK higher education opportunities. This was followed by a presentation by David Maynard, Director Education, British Council, where he discussed the various scholarship programmes administered by the British Council. The presentation exhibited the success of these programmes over the years and how they act as catalysts to promote UK education access in Bangladesh.

Following on, Javed Patel, Deputy High Commissioner to Bangladesh, spoke about UK education benefits and how it can provide an academic and professional boost for individuals. He said, ‘Sitting at the top of the world rankings, UK universities have a reputation for developing the skills employers are looking for in a candidate. It’s not only about attending lectures – students are actively engaging with tutors through lively seminars, discussions, and practical projects.’

The event’s final segment was a speech by the chief guest, Honourable Deputy Minister, Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury (Nowfel). He discussed the significance of these scholarship programmes in providing access to foreign education to Bangladeshi students despite financial impediments. He said, ‘Making foreign education more accessible to Bangladeshi students through these scholarships opens up a range of opportunities for them. It enhances their flexibility, cultural awareness, and an understanding of how other people work and think, hence improving their chances of future employability. Most importantly, a UK degree and work experience are highly valued worldwide.’

The event was a success that provided valuable information regarding scholarship programmes offer in Bangladesh. The changing landscape of the education market demands the creation of new opportunities, such as the scholarships provided by the British Council, for students to tap utilise. This event also served as an excellent platform for a wide range of education stakeholders to come together to discuss strategies for a collaborative and sustainable future, especially in times like these when face-to-face interaction is limited.
